So refreshing to hear someone voicing the on going thoughts that i have been having about education since the late 80's. Having been in teaching & training , with-in the Birmingham area in the UK, mostly with YTS ( the lost souls of our normal education system in the UK )Who responded, given attention and a different sort of teaching, mostly practical and hands on. Who in 2 years on the course developed & grew in to well rounded human beings, leaving behind the stigma of" no hope'ers " proving that they can learn, given the right environment and encouragement.
There is a wonderful documentary of a group of youngsters, from the inner city of Birmingham's roughest tower blocks areas, being coached by a director from the Royal Shakespeare theatre in Stratified on Avon( his name escapes me unfortunately) During the long summer holidays he encouraged this group to produce Romeo and juliet; using their homes as the back drop. It was film for TV, it was ABSOLUTLY WONDERFUL, which proved beyond doubt that given the right encouragement right teaching and stimulation plus the key to learning found, the best can be brought out in anyone; brought tears of delight to my eyes and a warm glow to my heart.
I so welcomed the speakers comment's. We don't all learn the same way; sad that its taken 25 years to be recognised, but better late then never? A most enjoyable and amusing talk. Thank you !

"Our current EDUCATION SYSTEMS worldwide are making children lose this capacity to be creative." When will it be time for parents, a child's primary cargiver and educator, to step up and be held accountable for THEIR role in how THEIR children turn out. Academic pressure and social discipline (citizen education) usually stems from family and government values. As for educators and educational philosophy, read Terry James' comment AGAIN!

Ken..........WELL SAID ! As an educator and counselor of many years I observe this:
Parents who try to control their children by punishment is such that it not
only muzzles creativity but turns it into destructive and hostile behavior.
So, in a sense, children's cretivity is never destroyed, only altered.
