Skill To A Happy Life: Accepting Yourself The Way You Are
Monday, March 19th, 2012How do you think you cope with yourself? Do you accept who you are? Love being yourself or hold grudges against yourself? There are no definite answers for these questions. At times you may like yourself, at some other time you may loath yourself for whom you are. In any of these cases you have to live with yourself. You can’t live with yourself happily if you don’t love and accept yourself. No one can.
What is self acceptance?
Self acceptance is all about accepting the kind of person you think you are and loving that being. It is relative to self image and self concept. Self image refers to the way we perceive ourselves to be and self concept means all the notions a person has about himself. Self acceptance is based on positive evaluation of the self; the person we think we are.
Self acceptance does not work in parts. You cannot accept a part of yourself and reject the rest. Just like the way you can’t separate nuts from snickers. They are a part of it, if you don’t like them then you go for a plain chocolate. So, you miss out on snickers as a whole. In the same manner self acceptance is done as a whole and not in fragments.
Accepting yourself does not mean that you make peace with every negative thing about yourself. If you’re an alcoholic or a druggie then you don’t go about practicing self acceptance, you aren’t that consciously aware of yourself for the purpose. You can’t accept every bad quality about under the pretext of accepting yourself as the way you are. Those negative qualities have to be reformed so that you and those around you experience more happiness.
Self acceptance helps you to develop trust in yourself and in life. The more you trust yourself the more you develop trust in your instincts, your inner goodness, your intuition and your soul. You perceive yourself in a different way than you did before, in a more positive way. You tend to develop a more positive outlook towards yourself, people around you and life.
We need to accept ourselves without getting illusioned about who we are. We need to have a clear image and also the right image of ourselves. There is a fine line between self acceptance and self deception which needs to be clear otherwise you’re just fooling yourself. Acceptance is not a passive state or where a person fails to change himself but a state of striving towards your best. Acceptance does not mean you are weak, it means you are strong enough to accept your faults and weaknesses and are willing to work upon them.
So this Self Acceptance, a flower which blooms slowly but its fragrance fades out even slower. It s that part of life which works behind the scene but controls all the other scenes of life. So which scene are you going to beautify today?
